Bhavani, took birth as a daughter of Daksha Prajapati to facilitate the development of the universe. She was an ardent devotee of Lord Shiva since her birth and eventually she got married to Lord Shiva. Daksha grew arrogant since he was a Prajapati. He organized a Mega Yagya but didn't invite Shiva and Sati. Sati thought that it was an oversight & requested Shiva to go to the Yagya. Shiva refused to accompany her but sent Nandi and other Ganas as escort. Daksha humiliated Sati, in front of Vishnu and Brahma, who immolated herself in the pyre. Shiva was furious. He created Virbhadra and Mahakali from his hair who destroyed the Yagya and killed Daksha. Shiva placed the corpse of Sati on his shoulder and went into mourning. Vishnu used his Sudarshan Chakra to dismember Sati's lifeless body, following which Shiva regained his equanimity.

Sati's body was thus dismembered into fifty-one pieces which fell on earth at various places. These fifty-one places are called Shakti Peethas, and are places of pilgrimage.
