Top class interviews are the building blocks of Interview’s DNA and the August issue reasserts the magazine’s genetic footprint: Nicole Kidman interviews French screen siren Marion Cottillard; Alison Gingeras interviews the distinguished Japanese artist Takashi Murakami; and neuroscience guru Dr V. S. Ramachandran gets inside the mind of Pharrell Williams of N.E.R.D., assisted in the operation by Dimitri Ehrlich. Pharrell Williams is a bit of a renaissance man who reinvented rap for a sophisticated music audience and the interview is accompanied by a freestyle portrait photoessay by Craig McDean, styled by Karl Templer. Furthermore, the issue also offers the second part of Peter M. Brant and Tony Shafrazi’s last ever interview with recently deceased legend Dennis Hopper.

In addition to all of this meaty content, the issue is particularly strong on fashion. Craig McDean’s fashion story, styled by Karl Templer, is called ‘Modern Love’. It unfolds at satisfying length, offering an updated nod to Bowie circa the Ziggy Stardust and Berlin years, all lean glamrock in today’s brands du jour. There is also an interview with designer Christopher Bailey. While Rosie Hungtington-Whiteley’s interview gets down to brass tacks with Yorkshire lad responsible for reinventing Burberry’s classic English style, Craig McDean’s photos and Karl Templer’s styling illustrate Bailey’s work in motion in the Burbery Prorsum AW10 collection.
