Radiation oncology is a specialty in medicine that treats cancer through radiation. Radiation is used for killing cancer cells, but obviously also damages normal tissue. Therefore, radiation oncologists use imaging devices (usually CT scans) to visualize exactly where the tumor/lymph nodes are that they want to treat. Once patients have a scan, they'll outline or "contour" all of the important structures in the scan. This includes things they don't want to damage (healthy tissue, nerves, kidneys etc.) as well as things they want to remove (tumor and nodes). When everything is contoured, a computer will run some complex algorithms to decide what the best beam trajectories and intensities should be to best hit the cancer, and spare healthy tissues. With new treatment machines, one can deliver upwards of 100 separate beams to make the radiation dose as conformal and as intense as possible around the cancer.
When residents and staff doctors are first starting out, it is really hard to remember guidelines for how to contour certain structures. For example, the brachial plexus is something you want to avoid irradiating when treating the neck. You can't see the nerves comprising the brachial plexus on a CT, and have to rely on anatomical landmarks to guess where they are. Thus, Radonculous was born - an application for Ipad/Iphone/Ipod Touch that displays a CT scan that is pre-contoured for specific structures will serve as an excellent reference for contouring.
We hope that this app suits your needs and purposes and as always, feedback is always appreciated!
